After a shaky start, during which the post was struck by Newcastle, Arsenal regrouped and hit the Geordies hard, with Odegaard striking from long range.
The battle was as physical as expected, but in the first 45 the lightweight Kiwior stood up to the task, despite causing consternation after a penalty was called by the referee for handball. VAR ruled it out, as it hit the Pole on the thigh.
Martinelli and Saka went close to adding to the lead, but at the break, the Gunners lead through Prince Charming's pile driver. Quite how Pope saved from the Disney Prince just before the break is anyone's guess, but the Norwegian was only a goalkeeper's leg away from doubling the lead.
