Newcastle 0-2 Arsenal

Schar, surprisingly, was the next player to score. Luckily for Arsenal, it was in his own net, as he unwittingly converted Martinell's driven cross.

Before that, Martinelli curled a shot against the crossbar, with Pope well-beaten, watching on as a spectator.

At the other end, Izak struck the post early on, as Arsenal tenaciously hung onto their single goal lead.

Tierney came on for the slightly disappointing Zinchenko with the game in the balance, and that had the desired effect with Arsenal doubling their lead.

The double substitution of Partey and Trossard for Odegaard and Martinelli was more mystifying, as the two being withdrawn were two of Arsenal's best players on the day. The other two were Jorginho, who orchestrated the midfield and Ramsdale, who pulled off a couple of excellent saves.

Saka and Jesus made way later for Nelson and Nketiah, as Arsenal hoped to see out the game.

Quite where the officials found six minutes from to add on, at the end, is a moot point, but Arsenal's determination isn't. Back-to-back wins was the reward.

Could City slip with Brentford and Brighten to come in the fixture list? Stranger things have happened.
