No Mahrez - Arsenal Ready To Spend £100m On Julian Draxler And Lacazette?

If Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger wants to give Arsenal any chance at all of winning the league next season, he must ensure Arsenal sign a striker this summer and maybe a wing forward. It is virtually a known fact that Arsenal didn't win the league last season because there was no one supporting Giroud, who himself shouldn't be leading the line for a club who is aiming to win anything tangible.

Giroud scored 16 league goals, Walcott scored six. Surely that is not good enough for a club that aims to win the title? For me, the failure to bring in a striker this summer will mean Arsenal will have no chance whatsoever to win the Premier League title.

That is especially so given that our rivals have been up and about, doing business in the transfer window so far. One could argue that Arsenal still have time to get their business done and, yes, they still do have time, but we have been there before. We have seen it all. This summer, in my opinion, is shaping out to be like that of last summer.

However, Arsenal have been heavily linked with the signing of different strikers and wing forwards which is an indication that Wenger himself sees the need to strengthen his attack before the transfer window closes. But again last summer we were linked with the signing of various strikers, although we ended up signing none.

After weeks of being linked with the likes of Mkhitaryan and Jamie Vardy, Arsenal this week have been linked ( once again ) to the signing of Riyad Mahrez. According to reports from France, Wenger has met with the player's agent and the terms of a contract have been discussed and agreed between Arsenal and the player and all that's left is for a fee to be agreed with Leicester City.

However, Italian journalist Emanuele Giulianelli is claiming Wenger prefers Julian Draxler to Mahrez. Apart from Draxler, Giulianelli reckons Arsenal are also interested in signing Alexander Lacazette in a deal the Italian believes will be worth as much as £100 million.

This report, if true, will delight Arsenal fans. I personally believe we not only need a striker but a right-sided winger as well, and signing the duo of Lacazette and Draxler or Mahrez will make a lot of sense in that respect.

As much as we need prolific strikers, we also need someone who can create and score from the wings. In the past we had Ljungberg and Pires contributing their own fair share of goals and after the aforementioned duo, we had Hleb and Nasri at one stage. Unfortunately, at present, aside from Sanchez, we don't really have any right-sided winger who score goals.

Having said that, I must also say I personally prefer Mahrez over Draxler. This is simply because Mahrez is settled in the league, has the versatility to play on both wings or as a 10 when necessary. Although Draxler can play on the right flank and as a false nine, if we will be signing Lacazette, then there won't be a need for someone to play as a false nine.
