Arsenal 2-1 Liverpool (half time)

The depleted Gunners were more than a match for high-flying Liverpool in the first half.

After Saka cut inside to unleash an unstoppable shot, it looked as if the team's most influential player had done it again. The fact that he was a last-minute selection given his injury problems of late, it was incredible how he was running Rober ragged.

That dream start was undone by nightmarish defending at a corner, when Liverpool drew level. Diaz beat Havertz at the near post and it was touched in by Van Dyke.

Later, Martinelli was felled in the area, but VAR predictably decided it was a fair sandwich!

The VAR team took two to three minutes, at least, to try to rule out Merino's header from a Rice free kick. It's shocking that VAR are working overtime to rule out goals. Surely, if it's not clear and obvious, they shouldn't be getting involved.

Although Arsenal are in the ascendancy, there's no guarantee of three points in a game like this, with VAR and officials unlikely to give the Gunners the breaks. However, Arsenal's determination shone through in the first half and if they can keep up this level of effort, they certainly have a chance.
