With league-leaders Liverpool winning 1-0 at Palace, Arsenal needed to try to match that result.
Despite their dominance though, Arsenal found the Saints defence and the ex-Gunners keeper, Ramsdale, concentrating when they needed to. Apart from losing possession in their own third a few times, Southampton didn't look like conceding, as Ramsdale was only really tested by a long-range sidefooted effort from Partey.
Arteta may have to make changes to win this game as, although Sterling looked bright and alive, he did not look a likely scorer. The same applied to Jesus, while Havertz looked less threatening than usual, playing in a deeper position.
At right back, Partey was drafted in for the injured Timber and was effective.
One thing is sure, Arsenal need the X-Factor to penetrate Southampton's stubborn defence and only Trossard and Nwaniercan provide that.
