The best team won. It's as simple as that. Arsenal huffed and puffed, but Everton exerted themselves even more so, deservedly, victory was theirs.
Tarkowski headed the winner from a deep corner, a ploy that caused Arsenal problems for the entire game. The marking was not always of the best quality at dead ball situations whereas, at the other end, set piece deliveries were generally poor.
Arsenal tried their best, but they never looked likely to score, despite Arteta throwing on Trossard, who tested keeper Pickford once, and Jorginho. Tomiyasu was also introduced from the bench, but too late to have much of an impact.
Ramsdale 7 - could do nothing about the goal
White 6 - cut a frustrated figure
Saliba 6 - blocked for the goal
Gabriel 7 - some clever defending
Zinchenko 6 - shooting was wayward
Saka 6 - mostly crowded out
Odegaard 6 - disappointing, despite some fancy footwork
Partey (Jorginho 6 - not much impact, but hit one good pass)
Xhaka 6 - professionalism without impact
Nketiah 6 - didn't get much of a sniff, but produced a magic dribble that deserved a better finish from Odegaard.
