Robin van Persie being named the PFA Player of the Year has surprised no one, but who could forsee that happening 8 years ago when he arrived from Feyenoord? Not me, that's for sure. Don't get me wrong, I was glad we'd signed him for £3m (what a snip, take a bow David Dein!) but I didn't think he would become an Arsenal superstar. I thought he had a good chance of becoming a first-team regular and that was about it.
Then, as we found out how skilful he was we also discovered how injury-prone he was too! How would this fragile Dutchman be able to complete a full season? I just couldn't see it.
But he went on to become Arsenal skipper and, of course, as well as bones he's broken all those goalscoring records to boot. I'm so glad he's proven me wrong.
The only thing I'm not glad about is David Dein, who brought him to the club, is no longer involved at Arsenal. How many great signings did Dein make? I've lost count. If the board have any sense, they'll bury the hatchet and bring Dein back. Can't see it happening somehow.
