The British tabloid the Metro is reporting that Arsenal target Gonzalo Higuain is seriously considering offers from the Gunners, after breaking up with his long-time girlfriend Lara Wechsler.
Arsenal have been keenly linked with the signing of the Argentine in the last few weeks after news emerged that he is ready to finally leave Napoli for a club where he will have a better chance winning titles; whether Arsenal falls in that category in the opinion of the former Real Madrid star is yet to be seen.
Reports indicate that his current employers Napoli would favour a move to a club outside the Italian Serie A, rather than selling to a rival (like champions Juventus) and indirectly strengthening them. Juve have already been linked with the signing of the striker. However, Napoli have made it clear unless the Old Lady pay his full release clause, he will not be sold to them.
Reports indicated last week that Arsenal have submitted a £42million plus French striker Olivier Giroud bid to secure the services of the Argentine, a report that the Serie A side has since debunked.
Should Arsenal manage to pull off the signing of Higuain, I hope Wenger will do it in a straight cash deal rather than a deal that will involve Giroud going the other way. That to me will make no sense. With Giroud in the team, we need another striker and if we bring in another and then get rid of Giroud, we would not have really solved our striker problem.
Also having said that, I would rather we look elsewhere than keep trying to get Higuain. The Argentine is 28-years-old and, although he is the sort of striker we need, unfortunately he is much too expensive. £42m for a player who will soon be 29 makes no sense.
I would rather we go for someone like Lacazette, who will be available more cheaply. We could use the money leftover from buying a cheaper striking option and spend it on someone like Mahrez or Draxler. We certainly need a striker, but as well as that, we need a wing forward. We really need someone who can score goals and play in other positions.
Walcott has shown beyond reasonable doubt that he is not to be trusted as a striker and we should FINALLY show him the door.
