Second half goals from Saka and Rice were the icing or Ricing on the cake!

West Ham rarely threatened in the second half. The fight had gone out of them with home fans leaving in droves at half time, too early to see the curse of the ex, courtesy of Rice from range.

It was pleasing to see Arsenal so determined to keep a clean sheet and Raya deserved it for his overall sharpness.

Suddenly, Arsenal fans might start dreaming of the title again, but given the number of injuries, the Gunners are still outsiders.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9155100467680607817.post-75328277652491679062024-02-11T15:06:00.001+00:002024-02-11T15:06:44.207+00:00West Ham 0-4 Arsenal (half time)Going 4 up doesn't necessarily result in victory, as Gunners fans know.

In the Wenger days, Arsenal managed to surrender a 4-goal lead at Newcastle.

However, many would say that this Arsenal team has more defensive solidity than some of the Wenger team's of yesteryear.

Despite the score line suggesting a blitzkrieg approach, the Hammers were undone by two corners and a penalty before Trossard's late goal in open play.

For the penalty, VAR took an age to confirm that it was a foul and a yellow card for the keeper, as the officials behind the scenes tried their best to deny Arsenal. For once, the couldn't manipulate the pictures enough to make their point, so the penalty stood. Saka earned it and despatched it, under pressure, as it was Arsenal's second.

The first and third were headers from corners, converted by Saliba and Gabriel respectively.

Before that, Alvarez was lucky to only see yellow for an x-rated challenge on Saka, but overall, before the set-piece goals, it was hard to see how Arsenal were going to dominate proceedings.

The Gunners' bench looks sparse, so they will need to keep the full complement on the pitch, as perhaps the only tried and tested substitute is Nketiah.

Although they deserve credit for their purple patch in front of goal, Arsenal need to remember that it's not over yet!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9155100467680607817.post-23379390797232048002024-02-04T18:35:00.001+00:002024-02-04T18:35:43.526+00:00Arsenal 3-1 Liverpool A game marked by defensive errors is one where Arsenal came out on top.

To beat the league leaders by two is always impressive, and Arsenal just about deserved this.

Yes, the Gunners were the better team and Trossard was the impact substitute again.

Martinelli provided the other goal after a defensive mix-up.

Liverpool's lead at the top has been cut to two points and hope springs eternal.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9155100467680607817.post-23577729443760064312024-02-04T17:23:00.001+00:002024-02-04T17:23:47.846+00:00Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool After a scintillating first-half display, Arsenal had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Or worse! Liverpool hadn't even managed a shot on target yet Gabriel's own goal gave them parity.

Saka's opener gave Arsenal a deserved lead, but if you don't take your chances you pay for it later!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9155100467680607817.post-55182956993193440582024-01-20T14:39:00.001+00:002024-01-20T14:39:42.344+00:00Arsenal 5-0 Palace Trossard's sublime finish to make it three effectively ended Palace's resistance and, although two goals from substitute Martinelli put a gloss on the win, no one will be getting too carried away after this victory.

Nevertheless, it was a clean sheet too and to boost David Raya's confidence further, he started the move that ended in Trossard's goal.

In truth, Palace are a decent team. However, they are not at their best right now. Olise, arguably the best player, is out injured, and questions are being asked about the board and the manager, Roy Hodgson.

As people say, though, 'you can only beat what it's in front of you' and Arsenal have done that comprehensively and impressively. Perhaps, it's onwards and upwards, but for now it's up to third.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9155100467680607817.post-68708607156508303832024-01-20T13:31:00.001+00:002024-01-20T13:31:04.410+00:00Arsenal 2-0 Palace The Gunners' winter-break trip to Dubai appears to have paid dividends, judging by their dominance over their local opponents at the Emirates.

Two goals from Gabriel were the difference between the teams at half-time, but the dubious goals panel seem intent on stealing Gabriel's second strike from him. What are these people on? If Gabriel didn't head it goalwards, then there would have been no goal. How can they award an own goal to Henderson? It makes no sense at all?

At least the goal wasn't ruled out by VAR. The Palace keeper claimed he was impeded by Ben White, but there was no excuse for the pitiful defending. Ben White was just standing his ground; he was not fouling the keeper.

It's good to see Arsenal scoring from two dead ball situations. Clearly, they've been working on these in Dubai.

Palace are likely to have a bit more about them in the second half, so Arsenal still need a third goal to put this game to bed.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9155100467680607817.post-50554366760737217792024-01-07T18:39:00.001+00:002024-01-07T18:39:52.240+00:00Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool (FA Cup)A Diaz strike and a Kiwior own goal ended Arsenal's FA Cup involvement.

Liverpool's smash and grab victory means it's one win in seven and three defeats in a row for the Gunners.

The Reds or should it be the Purples had the better subs, although not all are exactly household names. Credit has to go to Bradley, who came on as a right back to snuff out the threat of Martinelli, Arsenal's only partially effective substitute.

Nketiah barely made an impact as another substitute, while Smith-Rowe was only given three minutes of normal time to make a difference.

Meanwhile, the starting eleven acquitted themselves well.

Havertz did everything right, more or less, except score.

Saka was back to his best, despite his dodgy Achilles and his finishing.

Odegaard was impressive and hit the bar in the first half.

Saliba was majestic and the other defenders were reasonable.

Rice was snapping into the tackles, while Jorginho was dominant alongside him.

Ramsdale made a good save and even Nelson nearly scored.

However, if you don't take your chances, the ultimate price to be paid is defeat and until Arsenal bring an experienced out-and-out striker, they'd better get used to disappointment.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9155100467680607817.post-31160782386441147182024-01-07T17:35:00.001+00:002024-01-07T17:35:04.285+00:00Arsenal 0-0 Liverpool (half time)Maybe the Gunners should play in all white every match, if this it what it does for their performance.

After the damp squib without so much as a fizzle at Fulham, at the Emirates, the atmosphere was ignited by Arteta imploring the crowd to raise the roof.

Thirteen attempts on goal, five of which were on target. How many goals would Arsenal have scored with Ivan Toney in the team?

Dominant but without scoring, Arsenal fans have heard this narrative before.
At the moment, that's the most likely outcome.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9155100467680607817.post-34257839184416808622023-12-31T16:14:00.001+00:002023-12-31T16:14:26.632+00:00Fulham 2-1 Arsenal After a performance like that, there's no much to comment on.

Saliba came out of it with credit and maybe Gabriel: that was about it.

The rest weren't at the races.

This is one of the worst Arsenal performances of recent years: I lost count of the misplaced passes. There was no energy, no ideas and no strength in the 50/50s.

With Arteta confined to the stand, after what was deemed to be 'over-celebrating' at Luton, Arsenal lacked cutting edge.

Inevitably, when substitute Nketiah netted, it was ruled out for handball, even though Cash seemed to handle before Havertz.

Martinez ended the game with blood on his face, but a clean sheet.

Villa started more brightly with Bailey causing problems down Arsenal's left.

The Gunners clawed their way back into the game and Martinelli had a shot cleared off the line.

Martinez made a couple of smart saves from Odegaard, Saka and Jesus to keep Villa's lead intact.

The question everyone will ask is were Arsenal right to let Martinez leave. The answer is still the same: no. Although Raya is better with his feet and an upgrade on Ramsdale and Leno, I'm not sure he is quite as good as Martinez, who looks unbeatable today.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9155100467680607817.post-51256271478929738382023-12-02T17:09:00.001+00:002023-12-02T17:09:42.274+00:00Arsenal 2-1 WolvesIn the end, this was as far from my 3-0 pre-match prediction as I could imagine.

There was no way Wolves were going to roll over and let Arsenal tickle their tummies, but effectively, the visitors won the second half. That was due mainly to Arsenal's sloppiness more than anything else.

A Zinchenko defensive error more or less gifted the visitors a goal, so it was a case of hanging onto a slender lead as the clock ticked down.

One thing's for sure, this was not title-winning form, despite the three welcome points that keep Arsenal at the top of the league.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9155100467680607817.post-67161378827795161042023-12-02T16:03:00.001+00:002023-12-02T16:03:54.401+00:00Arsenal 2-0 Wolves (half time)After the 6-0 drubbing of Lens in the Champions League and two goals in two games for Havertz, Arsenal would be forgiven for expecting more of the same.

Despite the lack of Havertz in the starting line up, replaced by the in-form Trossard, Arsenal raced into a two-goal lead with goals from Saka and Odegaard. Assists were provided by Tomiyasu and Zinchenko respectively, as Arsenal tore Wolves apart in the early stages.

Near the end of the half, Arsenal began to make a few defensive errors and Wolves has a couple of chances to pull a goal back. The visitors will feel down but not out and Arsenal will have to find their form again to finish this game off.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9155100467680607817.post-57805138991833641312023-11-11T17:13:00.001+00:002023-11-11T17:13:35.864+00:00Arsenal 3-1 Burnley

In the end, it was a hard-fought win at the Emirates, despite the two-goal cushion.

Vieira's reckless challenge meant a red card and an early bath for the substitute, who had made little impact during his short time on the pitch as Havertz's replacement.

Unfortunately for Trossard, his bravery didn't only earn him a goal. It looked like he damaged his forearm in the process, so may not make it back for the second half.

Saka provided a headed assist, but Trossard had to be courageous if he wanted a goal, with keeper Trafford coming out to clear. In the end, Trossard nudged home the 1,000th goal at the Emirates, so will be remembered in the record books, despite the scrappy nature of the goal.

Burnley looked well-disciplined and hard to break down and tested David Raya in the Arsenal goal on two occasions.

Aside from the goal, the only time that Arsenal looked like scoring was when Saka unleashed a right-footed snap shot which was pushed onto and over the bar by Trafford.

Trossard also had a powerful effort saved, but in a way it seemed comfortable for the keeper.

The headline news was no White. Benny got a knock against Sevilla, so didn't feature and wasn't even on the bench.

Tomiyasu deputised and had a good half.

Odegaard is still out with an injury, which must be quite concerning to Arteta, watching his team slow out of the blocks and struggling to make chances against relegation fodder.

Perhaps Nketiah will be on in the second half for the injured Trossard.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9155100467680607817.post-14120237407438417882023-11-04T19:43:00.001+00:002023-11-04T19:43:08.279+00:00Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal This game had 'draw' written all over it until the ref and VAR decided a double-handed push in the back is not a foul. How the push on Gabriel was allowed to stand, I'll never know.

One shot on target and Newcastle had the lead through Gordon.

However, Arsenal were architects of their own downfall: why did they not play to the whistle? You can't assume the ball is out of play. You have to know it is. Willock's uncontested cross was flapped at by Raya, who was good apart from that moment.

It only takes a moment though.

Now Arsenal have no unbeaten league record to maintain, let's see how long it takes to bounce back.

Arsenal started without Odegaard for the third game running, but the Norwegian played as a late substitute in the West Ham league cup defeat, so some people wonder if he's been dropped for a lack of form.

The game has been played at a furious pace, but neither keeper has been truly tested.

Newcastle thought Havertz should have seen red for a reckless challenge, but although his studs were up, he didn't connect.

Martinelli had Arsenal's best chance, but fired straight at the keeper, Pope.

From Don't Fly Air Asia - they don't give refunds even when they cancel flights!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9155100467680607817.post-11191336472525491162023-10-21T19:34:00.001+01:002023-10-21T19:34:32.783+01:00Chelsea 2-2 Arsenal Far from vintage Arsenal, this performance, but the Gunners deserve credit for their never-say-die attitude, coming back from a two-goal deficit away is impressive.

Falling further behind to Mudryk's fluke cross-cum-shot was embarrassing for Raya, as he was poorly positioned.

Raya then went through a shaky spell, which will have Ramsdale fans up in arms.

However, Sanchez's howler was worst, as passed directly to Rice, who sidefooted in from long-range.

Bringing Trossard was a managerial masterstroke though, as he converted from close range from Saka's cross to give Arsenal a share of the spoils and a very welcome point.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9155100467680607817.post-79692862823214901672023-10-21T18:32:00.001+01:002023-10-21T18:32:49.147+01:00Chelsea 1-0 Arsenal (halftime)On this showing, Arsenal won't be pushing for the title this season.

Sloppy passing on a waterlogged Stamford Bridge and not 'wanting it' as much as Chelsea is what the Gunners have been guilty of.

It's no good complaining about a 'lucky' VAR penalty. The header from Mudryk looked goal bound. It hit Saliba's hand. Raya may have saved it, but I'd still call it a penalty.

The question is, though, should the penalty taker, Palmer have been on the pitch after his potential ankle-breaking tackle on Jesus? I'd have given the Chelsea goalscorer red for dangerous play, but it's always open season on Arsenal players, who are hunted like rabbits. It seems anything goes. Does anyone remember the horrific challenges that nearly ended the careers of Eduardo, Ramsey and Diaby. Dirty play like this needs snuffing out.

Talking of injuries, Saka, Saliba and Martinelli were all doubts before the game. I wonder how much pain they're playing with. Saka, in particular, struggled to get into the game.

Anyway, it's going to be a tough second half, especially without the referee's protection.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9155100467680607817.post-60809962283637578832023-10-08T18:32:00.000+01:002023-10-08T18:33:01.734+01:00Arsenal 1-0 Man CityThe Gunners stepped up in the second half and Martinelli's introduction as a substitute for Trossard proved pivotal, with his late strike From Havertz's headed lay-off being the difference.

Arsenal's substitutions were more effective than City's, so the apprentice finally beat his master in the league.
It's been a while coming, but Arsenal fans will celebrate this victory for a while.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9155100467680607817.post-67324608030006298152023-10-08T17:34:00.001+01:002023-10-08T17:34:38.033+01:00Arsenal 0-0 Man City (half time) Without Saka on the right, Arsenal looked devoid of ideas and even more questions will be raised by Arteta's decision to play the seemingly already injured player at Lens.
Another piece of fallout from that defeat in the Champions League was a mistake by Raya. The loanee from Brentford nearly became Calamity Dave after dwelling on the ball and nearly conceding to a Alvarez deflection. The same thing happens with Ramsdale on occasion, but the crowd have short memories.
Luckily for Kovacic, the referee remembered he had already booked him for raking his studs down Odegaard's Achilles. How that wasn't straight red, I'll never know. The challenge was reckless and from behind: what do VAR want. The other challenge on Rice wasn't as bad, but it was still vicious and intended to hurt. However, there was no punishment.
The only positives for Arsenal were Jorginho, Rice and Saliba. All three looked up for it. Jesus had a go too.
